Monday afternoon Sammy died peacefully in his owners arms.  “Martin and I and so many many of you will never be the same after knowing Sammy. His soulful eyes, his sweet spirit that shone through his beautiful face. Yet in that little baby was such strength. Sammy Strong!”

Last March Sammy was “found” by Keith Morgan tied in a garbage bag along a Brick Township, NJ road.  As it turned out Morgan and his wife Shauna were his owners and later charged with animal cruelty.  Even though Sammy was on the brink of death neither served any jail time.

Sentence overturned in New Jersey cruelty case

Ocean County Superior Court Judge James Blaney overturned the 6 month jail sentence in the Sammy cocker spaniel case because the defendant was a diabetic. Instead Keith Morgan received 90 days house arrest and 2 years probation while his wife Shauna received 1 year probation and 30 days community service.

New Jersey couple Keith Morgan and Shauna Ewing were sentenced to 6 months of jail for animal cruelty.  They tied their sickly cocker spaniel “Samurai” in a garbage bag and left him for dead along the roadside back in March, 2013.  The couple will also serve 30 days community service, pay $14,500 in fines and restitution, and are banned from owning any more pets.

Judge Robert M. LePore made an example of the two.

There has to be a deterrent to animal cruelty…Unless these individuals are imprisoned for their depraved, cruel and heinous conduct, such acts of animal cruelty will continue…

Initially, Morgan was treated as a hero for supposedly finding the abandoned dog.  He pretended Samurai wasn’t his but authorities discovered he was the owner.

Police have arrested the couple who “found” a seriously ill cocker spaniel along the road. Keith and Shauna Morgan were arrested yesterday on animal cruelty charges and filing a false police report.

A spokesman for the Associated Humane Society said they are unsure whether the cocker spaniel will pull through. The cocker spaniel was severely dehydrated and covered in matted hair and feces.

There’s a $500 dollar reward for anyone who can identity the person(s) who left a cocker spaniel tied in garbage bag along the roadside in Wall Township, New Jersey.  Staff at the Red Bank Veterinary Hospital have named him Morgan and are treating him for severe dehydration.  Morgan’s also on a feeding tube and on antibiotics for infections on his skin and ears.
